I am not sure if it's worth getting, since the Duden is so good. PONS Grosses Deutschwoerterbuch, which is also a monolingual e-dictionary for learners. I would be very happy to buy it if it ever comes out electronically. Unfortunately, it's only available in paperback. It's too advanced for beginners, but would be great for intermediate onwards.

I just tried out the PONS Premium German dictionary, which costs twice the amount of the Advanced, but can see no difference (either words are not found in both, or those found have the same definitions). I have been self-learning German for about five years, and have found reading German ebooks on the Kindle really helpful.įor a long time I have used at first the Collins German-English dictionary, and then a bit later the PONS Advanced German dictionary. In spite of these complaints, once you get to the point where you can read natural prose in a foreign language, even if only slowly and with difficulty, using a Kindle with a dictionary is a helluva shot in the arm. I don't want to sound too negative about it. It doesn't always recognize words with an infix -zu. If you need to look the infinitive up too, you'll need to tap the vertical ellipses, tap Open Dictionary, tap the infinitive, read and, hopefully, understand the definition. When you look up a strong verb, it just tells you what the infinitive is. You'll need to tap the whole word by hand. So if you've got the sentence "Er kommt an" and want to know what the verb means, you need to look up ankommen, not just kommen. However, I have had a few problems with it I'm not sure if they're specific to the dictionary or to how dictionaries work on the Kindle more generally. I've found the Oxford German-English dictionary, which u/viper_in_the_grass mentioned, to be helpful.
